Frequently asked questions

Everything people tend to ask before, or just after, dropping a file on Pack Camo. If your question is not here, the contact page explains how to reach me.

What is Pack Camo?
A free toolkit for converting and compressing files that runs entirely inside your web browser. It converts images, structured data, documents and archives using code compiled to WebAssembly, so the work happens on your own device rather than on a server.
Is it really free? What is the catch?
It is free, with no account, no watermark, no daily quota and no file-size tier. There is no catch to hide: because nothing is uploaded, running the site costs almost nothing, and a static page does not need a subscription to pay for servers it does not have.
Do I need to install anything or create an account?
No. Open the page in a modern browser and drop a file. There is no sign-up, no extension and no download beyond the page itself.
Which browsers are supported?
Any current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari, on desktop or mobile. The tools need JavaScript and WebAssembly, which every mainstream browser has shipped for years. Very old browsers, or browsers with JavaScript disabled, will show the page but the tools will not run.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. Every conversion happens inside your browser. Your file is read into memory, converted by code running on your own machine and offered back as a download. It never crosses the network, so there is nothing stored anywhere and nothing to delete afterwards.
How can I verify that nothing is uploaded?
Open your browser's developer tools, switch to the Network tab and run a conversion. You will see the page load its code and WebAssembly modules once, and then no request at all while your file is being processed. You can also disconnect from the internet after the page has loaded: the tools keep working.
Does the site use cookies or analytics?
The site uses Google Analytics to count visits and see which tools are used, which sets a small number of cookies. Analytics never sees the contents, names or sizes of your files. The full details are in the privacy policy.
Can I use Pack Camo for confidential documents?
Since files never leave your device, Pack Camo is a reasonable choice for material you would not upload to a conventional online converter. Do apply the same judgement you would to any software: the security of your own device and browser is what protects the file.
Which file types can it convert?
Four families. Images: PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO and SVG in, and WebP, AVIF, JPEG, PNG or traced SVG out. Structured text: JSON, JSONL, YAML, TOML, CSV and TSV in any direction, plus Markdown to HTML. Documents: Word .docx to PDF and PDF back to .docx. And any file at all can be compressed with gzip, zlib, DEFLATE or Brotli, or bundled into a ZIP.
Is there a file-size limit?
No fixed one. The limit is the memory your browser is willing to give a single tab, which on a desktop is typically a few hundred megabytes of working data. Large images and PDFs are the most demanding; if a conversion fails silently on a huge file, try a smaller one or a desktop machine.
Can I convert several files at once?
The compression tool takes any number of files and can bundle them into one ZIP. The image, data and document tools work on one file at a time, so that the settings you choose apply to exactly what you can see.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page and its modules have loaded. Because there is no server in the conversion path, losing the connection afterwards changes nothing. A full offline installation is not offered yet.
Why is the output quality or size different from what I expected?
Each format trades size against fidelity differently, and each tool exposes the settings that matter: quality and dimensions for images, indentation for data, compression level for archives, page layout for documents. The defaults favour a small file that still looks right; move the sliders if you need something else.
The conversion failed. What can I do?
First check that the input is what the tool expects: a valid JSON document, a real .docx rather than an old .doc, an image that opens elsewhere. Then try reloading the page, which clears the memory the previous run used. If it still fails, get in touch with the file type, the browser you used and the error message shown, and I will look into it.
The page loads but nothing happens when I drop a file.
That usually means the browser blocked WebAssembly or JavaScript, often through a strict privacy extension or a corporate policy. Try a private window with extensions disabled, or another browser.
How do I report a bug or suggest a feature?
Use the contact page. Bug reports are most useful with the exact steps, the browser and operating system, and, if you can share it, a file that reproduces the problem.
