Filler text that looks like text
Lorem ipsum is the placeholder designers and developers reach for when a layout needs words before the real ones exist. Because it reads like language without meaning anything, people judge the typography, spacing and rhythm of a page instead of stopping to read the copy.
Where it comes from
The text is a scrambled passage from Cicero's De finibus bonorum et malorum, written in 45 BC. A typesetter used it for a type specimen book in the 1500s, and it has filled mock-ups ever since. The generator draws from the same Latin vocabulary, so the result looks like the lorem ipsum everyone recognises.
The options
- Paragraphs, sentences or words. Paragraphs are four to eight sentences long, and sentences six to sixteen words, with the occasional comma.
- Start with "Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet". On by default, because that opening is how a reader recognises placeholder text at a glance. Turn it off when the opening must not be the same every time.
- Plain text or HTML. HTML wraps every paragraph in a
<p>tag, ready to paste into a template. - Regenerate draws new text with the same settings, until you get one you like.
Frequently asked questions
- What does lorem ipsum mean?
- Nothing, on purpose. It is a scrambled version of a Latin passage by Cicero, with words cut and changed until it no longer reads as a sentence. That is what makes it useful: it looks like text without distracting anyone with meaning.
- How do I generate lorem ipsum in HTML?
- Choose HTML as the format. Every paragraph is wrapped in a <p> tag, so you can paste the result straight into a template or a CMS.
- How many words are in a paragraph?
- Each generated paragraph has four to eight sentences of six to sixteen words, which is roughly 40 to 100 words. If you need an exact length, generate by words instead.
- Can I use the generated text commercially?
- Yes. Lorem ipsum is derived from a text written over two thousand years ago and is not under copyright. Just remember to replace it before you publish.
